NEW HAIRSTYLES TO TRY - Part 1

Choosing the right hair style is part technique and part art. The first step in finding the right hair style always comes down to determining facial structure.

Each face has its own unique structure. The shape of your face and head has a major role to play in the type of hair style you can wear best.

Additionally the shape and type of hair cut makes the difference between having an easy hair style and a style that becomes difficult to manage. Take your texture into consideration. For example, fine hair might require layers but thick hair could get out of controls with too many layers.

Knowing the shape of your face before you head to the salon will help you choose the right hair style and will help you to communicate better with your stylist.

HERE ARE OUR FAVORITE 10 HAIRSTYLES FOR GROWN-UPS:

BOB – This always-chic style can vary in length and even encompass curly locks like Meg Ryan's; it's a great style to try if you're tired of dealing with layers.

Helen Mirren shows off her classy silver hair in a simple, but elegant bob with bangs. This cut allows for so much versatility: in the days following this photo, Helen was pictured with her hair curled, waved and pulled back.

Bangs – Who needs injectables when you can cover up forehead wrinkles with flirty bangs?

Create a casual, but polished updo with a low ponytail paired with bangs (a high ponytail with bangs is too retro.) Angela Bassett's choppy bangs are a nice variation, too.
Make the most of fine hair with a soft, feathery fringe to highlight your eyes like Kristin Scott Thomas has done. Bangs like these work with all lengths of hair and are much more flattering than severe heavy bangs.

The most modern approach to wearing bangs with long curls or waves is to pair long, straight bangs with them, like Elle Macpherson does here. This long fringe also works well with shoulder-length layered hair.or a longer bob.

Shag – This hairstyle has been around for 40 years, but it still looks modern on older women because it adds movement and volume (something we could all use.)

Like a style that's more casual and youthful? Kathy Baker's shag with bangs is perfect for the active woman over 40. It has lots of shape (thanks to layers) but comes across as easy care and sporty.

Sharon Stone has worn just about every hairstyle out there, but this choppy shag is one of the sportiest. With it's face-framing layers and above-the-shoulder cut it has an easy chic that works well for over 40.

Jean Smart's tousled blonde shag features shorter, face-framing layers and bangs. The behind-the-ear styling also highlights her pretty cheekbones. This is a great layered short hairstyle for fine, straight hair to add volume and body.

Updo – The easiest way to go from casual to dressy in an instant is to put your hair up.
Michelle Yeoh found a pretty way to dress up a classic chignon: by adding a gorgeous piece of butterfly jewelry. The jade color coordinates back with her necklace and it's a unique way to work a beloved brooch or clip into your hairstyle.

Here's an interesting take on the classic ponytail. Jane Krakowski's fresh ponytail twist is made of softly waved hair and pulled to the side so it's visible. Very cute, and an easy way to use clip-on hair pieces to replicate this look.

This classy look for First Lady Michelle Obama relies on unstructured curls and lots of height built into the crown. It gives her a swept-back look that's soft, not severe. Extremely flattering and would work on women over 40 whose hair isn't long enough to pull up into an elaborate formal hairstyle.

Short Hair – Mature women cut their hair short for a variety of reason, but one of the best reasons is that it makes thinner hair look lush like Katie Couric's. See which celebs have the most enviable haircuts.

Although she frequently experiments with different looks, Halle Berry's signature pixie is still one of her best styles. This short 'do works best with an oval face shape, like Halle's.

Soft and easy, this relaxed bob on Sigourney Weaver has side-swept bangs and allows for some natural wave to show. Great on most face shapes.

Meg Ryan has gone back to wearing her hair shorter again (love!) and showed off a short curly bob this spring. This young, playful look works with hair with lots of body and curl.
